San Diego

After sleeping most of the way from Amman to Chicago (four seats across on RJ, a miracle - and I only fit on three) and enjoying Mexican food at O'Hare, I slept most of the way to San Diego.  Unremarkable.  Remarkable was my pickup by Scout, a trail angel and former thruhiker.  He and his wife, Frodo, have an amazing setup for hosting hikers, including a garage outfitted as a Post Office, hiker boxes of free stuff, snacks, beds...Scout stayed up with me until 2am giving me advice about the trail (consider pants, my 30 degree sleeping bag will be fine, good choice of tent in the Hexamid) and chatting about politics and religion, both of which we have in common.

Turns out one of the hikers sleeping upstairs who will be starting with me tomorrow (er, today, actually in a couple of hours!) is Israeli.  Did not expect language immersion on the PCT, but I'll take what I can get.
